Pylon #7 Print E-mail

Report by Anthony McDonald

With partially cloudy skies and little wind we couldn't have asked for better October weather. Make up race #7 got off to a lite showing only ten pilots. All hands were needed to make the races successful. A handful of club members that thought they were coming out only to watch found themselves either becoming pylon judges or counters.

The best attended class with a total of six was the T-28/Corsair class. The first heat set the tone for the rest of the entire day for all the classes. Half of the pilots not only cut, but cut out on the north pylon. Heat two turned out to be a repeat performance of heat one with half the pilots cutting out. Heat three only had one of the six pilots cutting out. Heat four was the only heat that saw all pilots fly clean. Brian Young was on fire with four victories. Jake Boatman with three firsts and cutting out in heat two! Paul Kohlmann flew clean and finished first in heat two to spoil Brian and Jakes domination of victories for the day. Wylie was consistent with four second place finishes. He and Brian were the only two in this class not to cut out of a race. Ben Mackles finished second once and third once. Phil Leech came in third in heat four. Brian won the most points for the day with 20. Wylie came in second with 16. Jake Boatman with 15. Paul with 12. Ben 7. and Phil with 3 points. The over all points lead for the year is still held by Brian.

The Dog fighter class was flown by Brian Young, Ben Mackles, and John Stychno. It was a toss up With Brian winning twice and John winning twice. Ben rounded out the field with three third place finishes. John Stychno is still the over all points leader followed closely by Brian.

The Electric formula One class had five pilots in total. Three of the pilots only competing in this class. Heat one ended with all five pilots cutting out on the north pylon. Heat two once again saw all five pilots cut out on the north pylon! Heat three started with the north pylon judge calling in not one but two other members to back him up. When heat three was over Jacob McDonald came away with the victory followed by John Stychno, Steve Cole, Wylie Walters, and Tony McDonald. Heat four saw three north pylon judges again as to avoid any confusion due to the fast and furious pace. When the dust settled the win went to John as Steve cut out, Tony cut once but came in second, followed by Jacob in third, and Wylie in fourth. The points winner for the day was John with 9, second was Jacob with 8, Wylie 6, Tony 5, Steve with 3 . That puts Steve, Jacob, and John in a three way tie for first place in the over all points battle. That's the closest race for a championship this year with only eleven points separating first place from forth place. It seems that the EF-1 class and rules set forth by NMPRA is keeping parity between the different manufactures and different types of aircraft that are allowed in the class.

A special thank you to the four club members I saw that were not competing but offered to help with pylon judging and counting. Drew Kohlmann, Andrew Mackles, Gabe Black, and Charles McDonald. With out help from you guys we wouldn't have been able to enjoy quality club racing. Thank you.
