76  General Category / General Club Discussion / air time duration with glider on: March 10, 2013, 05:36:34 PM
OK-here's the deal--Julio & I have had a little competition with our gliders. Today Julio's best was 45 minutes with a 3000 mah battery. After he left I had my Radion Pro up for 1 hour & 45 seconds with a 2200 mah battery. Come on Bob Film, I know you can beat that !!

Thanks Red for putting that picture up.  And now there's another one for Tony McDonald. He had son Jake flying his Four Star 40 pulling an 80 ft. streamer. Tony was watching and didn't want to miss the fun we were having chasing the 4 *, so up he wsent with his Spitfire racer. It didn't take long--he took out his own plane. Hard to believe that little foamie took out the big 4 *, but it flew right through the wing of the 4 * with hardly any damage to the Spitfire. Looks like the obituary thread is going to fill up quicker than we all though. Sorry to see the expiration date come up on that 4 *, Tony. It was a beautifull plane.

Red took a picture with his phone, but it was too big. The site wouldn't let me post it.

I can add to this one. My latest and greatest ("Great Planes" Revolver) that I maidened in Dec. 2011 was eaten by the vineyard. Red was at the sticks, but it was NOT his fault. This is a mid-wing design with nylon thumb screws inside to hold the wings on. After a flight I forgot and left the thumb screws on the table at the field. I could not find replacements anywhere. So I used steel ones instead. I had flown it a few times like this. On this day I guess I didn't tighten 'em enough. While I was flying Red walked over and I handed him the transmitter asking him to show me what the plane was capable of. I love watching Red or Steve Cole or Tony McDonald wring out my planes. They make 'em do things I can't. Sooooooooo-Red took control headed straight up with a little roll one way then the other----Then the plane did some strange things. We quickly realized something was amiss. As it started down we could see that one wing was a little cockeyed. (thumb screw came loose) And we all know planes just don't fly very well when things aren't lined up as they should be. So in the vineyard she went. And grape vines are a lot tougher that balsa wood.

Well then-I stand corrected. I didn't think about the cost of the name tags. What a great idea you guys came up with. I'll be asking Phil for one of those stick-on pins. And ya won't hear another word about all that from me.

I got mine. Great job. Although I think it's costing the club a little more money and time to do it this way I understand why it was done. Now all we have to do is get everyone to proudly display their membership card to show they are paid up members. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Merle-Sounds great. I wish I could be there, but I'll be on a motorcycle ride with the Oakland club. If this does get going though, I'll have a streamer on my T-28 and be in the mix.

Great-like I said-I'm not working, so just give me a call and I'll meet you up there. I know from experience that the glider pilot has to stay behind the tug and not get any higher then the tug. The last time Julio and I tried it, he (glider pilot) got way above me pulling my tail UP and therefore keeping my nose DOWN and we wound up down in the jungle, still tied together because of our "Mickey Mouse" release set up. Soooooooooooo-I didn't want to try it any more. But we did have s few succesfull flights. I'm sure you and I can pull it off without a hitch.
Anxiously waiting-John

Sure I'd give it a try. What the hell it's all your equipment. I'll fly either one for ya. Let me know when. Julio and I tried this a few years ago up at the old field. We did OK considering e didn't know what we were doing and didn't have a proper release method. Sounds like you've got it together.

3 foot string?  15 foot ribbon?   Shocked

That's 18 foot away from full contact!  LET'S DO THIS!!
I'll vote for T-28 combat. Mine looks like it's been in combat already anyway.

I would like to see trainer class again, also. Ya know-if there's enough interest.
