My life as a pilot

I cannot remember when I started getting interested in airplanes but it was a long time ago. As a young child I grew up with a family from the Russian River area who were interested in steelhead fishing in a big way. I had my own steelhead rod & real which I traded for a Spitz Biplane, a little red spitz biplane with a 049 engine. I rarely got in trouble as a child but I sure did with that trade.

I did not have money for fuel or batteries. But that was not stopping me, to get that plane airborne, I tied a string on one wing and swung it around in circles.

My next source of pleasure came when I started building plastic model airplanes.

After I was out of the service and was earning some money I could afford to buy control lines. This time I would swing the airplanes not by a string but by a metal cable. I started with ringmasters and voodos. I had one great teacher, my brother Charlie Cox.

I have been with the club since before we started flying at the Healdsburg dump and have enjoyed it very much. My garage serves as my hanger the planes hang from the garage ceiling, and it is full of airplanes, which are my pride and joy.

That is about all I have to say, I'm hooked!

As a kid I started off with the small dime store balsa gliders and rubber band powered balsa planes.

Also built a lot of plastic model’s, couple control line planes, a few Balsa / Tissue kits and later designed / scratch built a couple of model Tug Boats.

A few years ago, I got a Park Zone, 3 channel Super Cub which I taught myself to fly in a horse pasture. After many crashes and repairs, I then then got the computer Flight Simulator which was a tremendous help!

After customizing the Super Cub and progressing thru a few of the Park Sized Foam planes, I was ready to move up to larger planes.

Joining the club has been a huge benefit as I’ve met many friendly folks who are extremely knowledgeable, experienced and helpful with great advice.

I also very much enjoy the camaraderie on fly days, club events and meetings.

I highly recommend joining the club to anyone interested in RC Planes, I’m very glad I did!
